It’s basically a previous-gen Cruze with a new design, made for the Chinese market.

I get that the Chinese car buyers are fond of classic American nameplates, but why Cavalier?

Being a J body fan (I’m recovering, don’t worry!) I say good on GM for keeping the name around. Kinda like China and Buick.

Very nice. The Chevrolet Small. Its reasonably safe good looks harken back to the Chevrolet Medium and Chevrolet Large.

I really hope this car is successful and doesn’t bring shame to the storied nameplate.

you jest, but way back in the day that’s how things actually were. Everyone remembers the 1957 Chevy Bel Air, but nobody remembers the 1957 Chevy 210 and 150 that were basically the same car but with lower trim/fewer features.

‘57 Bel Air:

‘57 210:

‘57 150:

people (even those alive back then) don’t seem to remember that the only cars Chevrolet sold in the ‘50s were this (in two or four doors) and the Nomad/Townsman (two/four door wagon.)

That’s it. There was no subcompact, compact, midsize, full-size, etc. They had one car, and one wagon. and you chose the number of doors and trim level. That’s why, when the Nova came out in the early ‘60s, it was called the “Chevy II.” Back then, GM was working under the “Sloan Model,” where instead of one brand having a hierarchy of models and trim levels, they used the brands themselves as the hierarchy. In Alfred Sloan’s mind, the ideal customer would get a Chevy as their first car, then when they got a good job they’d step up to a Pontiac. Then a Buick, then an Oldsmobile. When they retired, they’d buy a Cadillac.

well, they’re competing with the Ford Escort, so why not?

I’m not joking:

Kinja'd!!!

I’m serious when I say China has a huge affinity for American brands. China is literally the only reason Buick still exists. plus, since the old crapulent Cavalier and Escort were never sold there, the names carry no baggage. and I’m assuming the sounds of the names don’t equate to anything bad in Mandarin or Cantonese (like how Alfa had to rename the 164 to 168 when they marketed it in China.)

They sure are critical of a car that costs 12k.

Apparently S-Tec is a “wuzzy” engine name. Whatever that means.

That front angle is quite nice, but the rest... eesh. Those proportions though.
